inbyronbaytoday... the other day
Check out the freindly folks, Ben and Yoko from http://www.inbyronbaytoday.com/. They do a great job at fueling the stoke by posting up a daily summary of the waveriding and other antics that go on in byron every day. This is Lina and I the other week, making the most of a soft south swell trickling into Cosy Corner. Chuffed with the photos, thanks guys!

deepwater
This is William Trubridge performing the first ever no suit, finless freedive through the arch in Egypt. He swims 50m down and 30 meters across before resurfacing. -It's epic-
Joe Larkin
The other week I was super stoked to meet Joe Larkin at the Surfworld Museum. Joe is one of Australia's first surfboard builders and established the first ever surf shop on the Gold Coast. Talk about seeing it all, he spoke of meeting the Duke and watching him surf, mentoring guys like M.P and Rabbit in the shaping bay and the age old rivalry between clubbies and surfers. We got the grand tour with board collector Carl Tanner and Jo reminiscing there way around the museum. -It was awesome!-

8.8.10 in the diary
Last year I went along to the first wooden surfboard day at Currumbin Alley organised by Grant Newby (same guy that does the fish fry). It was awesome. Inspired me to get my act together and make my alaia as well as a couple of handplanes which Ive been having a heap of fun with recently. Look forward to going again this year. If you're in the area go check it out!

Nearly every plastic bottle ever made still exists today!
Plastiki is a portmanteau of the words plastic and Kon-Tiki.
Kon-Tiki is the raft used by the Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyedahl in his 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands.
Plastiki is the raft currently crossing the Pacific, only this raft has been built from 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles, is 60ft long and features many renewably energy systems.
It has currently travelled 3/4 of its journey from San Fransisco to Sydney after spending 91 days at sea at an average speed of 4 knots.
Their mission is to bring peoples attention to the sad reality of the pacific gyre where a floating island of plastic about twice the size of Texas continues to grow!
Pure inspiration..
Please say NO to plastic bags and bottles!

out of the dust
Finally got around to making my alaia! Was such a satisfying process from ordering the blank through to (eventually) finding trim on a knee high left. Grant from surfinggreen.com.au supplied me with the blank and a 'how to' manual which was super helpful. I went for a 6'8 parabolic outline and put a deep single concave through the tail. After a solid 7 hours of sanding, a sore back and a house filled with the sweet aroma of gum turps and linseed oil I emerged triumphantly with this great new edition to the quiver.
First attempt out at little Wategoes on a head high afternoon saw me slipping and sliding all over the shop just trying to paddle the thing as the oil hadn't completely absorbed. Second attempt on a smaller high tide shorey and I found my feet and straight lined to the beach spinning out onto the sand. Finally just yesterday I had another go and managed to get a few beautiful little left sliders and perform a few friction free spins across my best one. the waves were small but the board was flying and I came home stoked!
Such a fun project that I'd highly recommend to anyone wanting to give it a go.
